18th Century Colonial Market Faire at Fort Yargo State Park

18th Century Colonial Market Faire at Fort Yargo State Park
Every year in the Spring, the Fort Yargo Historical Society puts on their 18th Century Colonial Market Faire at Fort Yargo State Park. I have heard about it but had never been. This weekend we decided to go. We had half the day free and my son didn't have a ball game so we decided to go see what it was all about. Fort Yargo is one of those state parks with tons of things to do: boating, fishing, mountain biking, camping, cabins, yurts, hiking, putt putt, etc. (Fort Yargo is also one of Georgia's First Time Camper Parks which is pretty awesome since there's so much to do there.) I wish we had planned more in advance and taken "CC" over there to camp for the weekend.

The "faire" takes place at the old fort. Which is nothing more than a two-story cabin that was built as a trading post in 1792. The historical society holds regular living history events there so there's plenty of opportunity to go see folks dressed in period attire and learn some history (check their page for dates/times). One of the neat things they have there that I was finally excited to see in person (having seen some on TV and in books) is a beehive oven. The event was fun for the kids to walk around and see people dressed in period attire. there was a blacksmith and several men doing militia drills with muskets. All of the vendors and participants also camped right there in period tents and the kids enjoyed seeing what the tents looked like. The animal skins and food were also a fun touch for the kids. Admission to the "faire" is free for kids under 12 and only $5 for those older. (+ $5 park fee)

My son loved the skins tent.
The only thing I think I would make a recommendation to the historical society is to maybe have a calendar of events. There were lots of different things going on but I never saw a paper or bulletin board with a calendar of events to plan our visit around. They did have a vendor for food but we took a picnic and went down to another area of the park where there were picnic tables and playground for the kids to enjoy and get some energy out.

So get out an enjoy your State Parks and find out what events they have going on! You never know when you might miss a great opportunity. If you've been to one of the FYHS events at Fort Yargo, let us know what event and how you enjoyed it.
